The Steering Committee of the EU-Russia Civil Society Forum calls on the Russian authorities for a prompt, thorough, and independent investigation into the murder of Boris Nemtsov, a prominent leader of the democratic movement in the country. Nemtsov was shot on the night of 27 February 2015 in the heart of Moscow, at the bridge just meters from the Kremlin.
‘Boris Nemtsov is another name in the tragic list of those who lost lives in their struggle for fundamental rights and freedoms in Russia,’ says Katarzyna Batko-Tołuć, member of Forum’s Steering Committee. ‘There needs to be an efficient and impartial investigation into these killings. Every day of delay adds to the atmosphere of intimidation of the plural voices and impunity in Russia.’
Boris Nemtsov was known as an important ally for the anti-corruption work and civil society initiatives in Russia as well as an advocate of human rights and freedoms. He also had a principled position on Ukraine.
The Steering Committee of the EU-Russia Civil Society Forum expresses deepest condolences to Mr Nemtsov’s family.

The public memorial service will take place on 3 March 2015, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Sakharov Centre in Moscow.
