The Rory Peck Trust provides practical and financial support to freelance journalists and their families, assisting in times of crisis and helping them to work more safely and professionally.

Types of assistance offered by the organisation:

Emergency fund

Target group: journalists

Operates worldwide

The Assistance Grants are meant to help professional freelance journalists (and/or their family) who are facing a crisis directly related to their work. The amount of assistance varies according to the particular circumstances of the applicant, but may include medical and rehabilitation costs, subsistence costs or relocation costs. Sometimes our grants support a freelance journalist forced into exile or help replace stolen or confiscated equipment. They may also provide assistance to a freelancer’s family following an injury, imprisonment, kidnap or death. The aim is to help grantees overcome a crisis and, where possible, resume work.

The Rory Peck Training Fund enables freelance journalists to gain the essential skills and knowledge needed to work in difficult and potentially dangerous situations. Launched in 2000, the Training Fund has given hundreds of bursaries to freelance journalists, photographers, camera operators and filmmakers to allow them to take part in a training course with one of our trusted course providers. Courses teach them to assess risk and spot danger, handle a crisis, support others and give vital first aid.
